In our San Diego Youth Science Session #4: Physics In our San Diego Youth Science Session #4: Physics of Motion - King Tides & Marble Engineering, students explored mechanical energy and how engineering can be used to influence energy in a system. The UTK-5th grade research teams were challenged to apply the Engineering Design Process to solve a problem: How can we slow a marble when it has gravitational potential energy? What are the forces affecting its path? What will make the path the quickest, or the slowest, and how do obstacles affect movement?

Couched in the concept of forces in motion, students also examined the physics behind the local flooding caused by the King Tides in January. This relevant phenomenon serves as a fantastic opportunity for communities to examine where future flooding from sea level rise may occur. Check out the database being created by citizen scientists and uploaded to the California King Tides Project.

So many of our students this year have expressed their interest in doing dissections, and we are thrilled to announce that thanks to the monetary contributions from our PBE community through our school fundraisers and donations, FOPBE has approved an additional session of SDYS, Session #5: Ecology, Adaptations, and Energy Flow!

All PBE students will continue exploring local science as they delve into energy flow in a food web, resource management, and dissections to examine the role specific adaptations play in survival.

Here's what our students can look forward to dissecting in this additional SDYS Session:

UTK/1st grade - squid

2/3rd grade - mackerel

4/5th grade - spiny dogfish SHARKS!

SDYS always welcomes parent volunteers during our science sessions. Please reach out to your child's teacher if you're interested in participating.

5th grade Living Museum REMIX! We're LOVING all th 5th grade Living Museum REMIX! We're LOVING all the photos that have been sent in from the Living Museum! Keep sending them along as we love sharing them with our PBE community!
How cool was the 5th grade Living Museum exhibit!? How cool was the 5th grade Living Museum exhibit!?

Each student was tasked with picking a person, living or dead, to learn about and transform into for the exhibit. The students researched what made their individual famous and were responsible for gathering other interesting facts to present during the exhibit. Our fifth-grade teachers, Mrs. Erickson and Mr. Sandler gave the parents and other exhibit visitors star-sized questions to ask the students as they were interviewed as their individual of choice and had to remain in character for the entirety of the exhibit! The students took on the character of their person of choice and were expected to respond as that person when being questioned by our exhibit guests.

Our students were spectacular and our parents described the event as AWESOME!
