Mr. Sandler's fifth-grade class watched a recordin Mr. Sandler's fifth-grade class watched a recording of the National Stock Market Game Awards Ceremony, recognizing students for their financial prowess during their participation in the annual Stock Market Game.

Our PBE fifth-grade students, Ethan, Julian, Dylan, and Daniel, won second place across all of San Diego County with their team "The $ Magnets," making a profit of $11,921.44.

We are so proud of our students, and clearly, their classmates are proud of them as well! And thank you to Mr. Sandler for leading our students in such an engaging, real-life, educational experience!
Wow! What an incredible turnout for our PBE Scienc Wow! What an incredible turnout for our PBE Science Night 2022! It was so nice to see our PBE community gather again and on our PBE blacktop nonetheless.

We would like to extend a special thank you to all of the volunteers that helped make this event happen! We were so lucky to have the training and participation of both the Fleet Science Center and San Diego Youth Science for our exhibits. And none of this would have happened without our very own Mr. Doug, who led science night and put on such a wonderful event for our PBE students, families, friends, PBE teachers, and staff.
Meet Mr. Doug! Doug LaRue is PBE's Noon Time Supe Meet Mr. Doug!

Doug LaRue is PBE's Noon Time Supervisor. He started as a volunteer at PBE and was recruited by the Principal a few months later as a permanent employee. Doug has been with PBE for the last 5 years.

Here are a few fun facts about Mr. Doug:

1. Doug was born in Massachusetts and is the 4th child in a family of 6. He grew up in a neighborhood of over 70 school-age kids where they made wooden carts from broken baby strollers, fixed old broken bikes, and made model cars and airplanes in the basement during winter.

2. After high school, Mr. Doug left Massachusetts with his best friend and only $5,000 in the bank. They rode their motorcycles all the way to San Diego, where Doug has been ever since.

3. Mr. Doug lived throughout San Diego but eventually landed in an apartment on Law Street in PB, living on the beachfront while working as a mechanic in the '80s.

4. After working 3 years as an automotive mechanic with the only telephone company at the time, AT&T, Doug put himself through two college degrees: an AS from Mesa College in Electronic Technologies and Digital Systems; and a BS from SDSU in Computer Science.

5. After Doug and his wife married, they started a small business. Besides learning the ins and outs of running a small tech company, Mr. Doug states that he learned welding, plumbing, PV solar systems, beer brewing, CAD design, EV systems, and various battery systems and technologies.

6. After his daughter was born, Mr. Doug was a stay-at-home-Dad and after 3 years he used his weekends to learn about DIY 3D printers. Doug built his first 3D printer in 2014. He even taught a few high school kids how to make their own 3D printers. Mr. Doug built 2 of the 4 Cupcake Cars ever made in San Diego, which led him into more robotics projects, running meetups, and teaching software development and electronics.

7. In his free time, Mr. Doug enjoys roller skating, bicycling, and inventing. He also runs the monthly Autonomous RC Car meetup called “Beginner and Builders with Beers”.

Mr. Doug is a big fan of DIY making, science, and discovery and is hopeful we can kick up the STEM and STEAM efforts at PBE!
Meet Ms. Kelly! Ms. Kelly supports PBE in a myriad Meet Ms. Kelly! Ms. Kelly supports PBE in a myriad of ways including supporting our PBE TK and Kindergarten students with their reading skills, substituting for teachers, helping in the office, assisting with student testing, and supporting special needs students.

Here are a few fun facts about Ms. Kelly:

1. Ms. Kelly loves animals! She fosters dogs for many different rescues and many of our PBE families, teachers, and staff have adopted dogs from Ms. Kelly. Meow-Meow is Ms. Kelly's "saint of a cat" who puts up with Ms. Kelly's foster dogs while they await their "furever" homes.

2. Ms. Kelly loves Yosemite and worked there before getting her first teaching contract in 1990. She drove buses and led tours informing guests about the geology, history, wildlife, and plants of the region. Ms. Kelly has hiked up the backside of Half Dome twice.

3. The ocean is one of Ms. Kelly's great loves. She enjoys watching the sunset at Tourmaline. She loves snorkeling at La Jolla Cove once the water reaches at least 63 degrees. She snorkels from The Cove to La Jolla Shores during the summer.

4. Ms. Kelly attended Kindergarten, 5th, and 6th grades at PBE.

5. Ms. Kelly is of Irish heritage and each year she volunteers as an announcer for the Saint Patrick's Day Parade, the biggest parade west of the Rockies.

6. Ms. Kelly took a Readers Theater class for teachers in London, England. Upon leaving England, she traveled to Ireland to see the land of her Irish grandparents.

7. Ms. Kelly is a certified yoga teacher and began her yoga journey taking night school classes at Mission Bay High when she was 18.

8. Dance is one of Ms. Kelly's favorite things to do. One year she taught dance to every student at Baker Elementary teaching the Mexican Hat Dance, hula dance, and a dance Ms. Kelly choreographed to the Beach Boys' song, ‘Surfin' USA’.

Ms. Kelly says she "loves seeing all of the sweet little smiles on our PBE student's faces each morning." She loves working at PBE because our school focuses on learning new ways to teach children, our teachers are smart, innovative, and always willing to collaborate, and PBE families are kind and support learning in fun ways.
We are pleased to announce that our very own PBE 5 We are pleased to announce that our very own PBE 5th graders, Dylan and Julian, are the recent winners and recipients of the Kiwanis "Hope of America" Award.

Our local Kiwanis Club of Pacific Beach participates in the annual presentation of the “Hope of America” Award, which recognizes outstanding elementary school students. Each year, the "Hope of America" Awards are given to 5th-grade students who have demonstrated high academic achievement, leadership, good ethical and moral character, and who exhibit the promise of future service to society and outstanding citizenship.

Each year, the Kiwanis Club of Pacific Beach invites our school to participate in this worthwhile process by selecting no more than two students who exemplify these characteristics. The 5th-grade class held a vote and Dylan and Julian were picked by their classmates as the students most deserving of this award.

Upon being selected, students, along with family members/guests and a school representative, are invited to attend a Pacific Beach Kiwanis Breakfast held at The Broken Yolk Café where each student will be presented with a special Kiwanis Foundation “Hope of America” plaque.

We are so proud of you Dylan and Julian! Congratulations on your well-deserved achievement!
